Raspberry, SK Red Mammoth
1 bare root cane
zone 2
Fruits on second year canes
Very cold hardy, Zone 2 raspberry that produces the largest berries on record. Produces loads of very sweet massive sized berries in August. SK Red Mammoth is an improved version of Boyne Raspberry. SK Red Mammoth is also a semi thornless variety and is one we regularly use for bouquet filler greenery.
This raspberry will tolerate being planted in some shade. In the fall or early spring, Remove canes that have fruited by cutting the cane off at ground level. This will increase future berry yields. SK Red Mammoth fruits on second year growth, so to increase yields the following year, keep some new green shoots and thin out any that are weak or spindly. Mid summer, it will produce a large flush of berries on canes that grew previous year.
Planting: Hydrate bare cane root in water by soaking for an hour in water. We often add a drop of Premium Liquid Worm Extract in the soak water. Or fill planting hole with water before planting to hydrate soil well. Plant in humus rich soil that is well draining but holds moisture well. Adding worm castings to the planting hole can help retain moisture and aid rooting. Plant the crown (where root meets the stem) 1 to 2 inches below the soil level. Keep well hydrated but not saturated.
