Lupin, Westcountry Salmon Star
1 bare root
Lupins are a perennial in our northern climate, however Westcountry Series Lupins do not have data on them here in the north to determine exactly how winter hardy they are for an official cold hardiness rating for our zone. We are however growing them on our farm in growing zone 2 as cut flowers. Masterpiece series of lupins were developed with tissue-cultured or vegetatively propagated in England. Adding Westcountry series to your northern garden as a perennial comes with risks of unknowns on hardiness here in the north. Amending the Soil in spring and fall with Superworm soil improves hardiness. Alternatively amending the soil with worm castings and glacial rock dust also improves some winter hardiness. Covering plants with leaf mulch in the fall definitely helps too!
Lupins do not like dry soil. Humus rich, evenly hydrated soil improves plant vigor and bloom production. Cutting spent blooms also encourages another flush of blooms.
