Eclipse, 3 pack Asparagus Crowns
3 pack of No. 1 size roots
Eclipse is an all make hybrid, meaning it does not put energy into producing seed or berries, it directs all it's energy towards larger spear production. The spears on Eclipse are thicker that most varieties with firm tips and tender spears. Eclipse reaches maturity faster than most other varieties out there, providing larger harvests much sooner. Eclipse was bred at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
We use Eclipse for both fresh eating on our farm, but also as a cut flower filler greenery. Since eclipse does not make seed, the foliage it produces once it is past harvest stage for eating, asparagus fern works incredible in bouquet work, with a very long vase life. One of the most requested filler foliage we had from florists back when we used to sell wholesale flowers.
Planting. Soak the crowns in water for about 10 minutes. Loosen soil to a depth of 12" and work in a some well aged manure or good quality compost and worm castings. The trick to planting asparagus for earlier crops is to make a mound inside the planting hole where you can set the crown on top of the mound and run the roots downward along all the sides of the mound. The crown needs to be covered with 2 inches of soil, so this may take some tries to set the crown just right. Once crowns are set and planted, water deeply. Asparagus need moisture to really take off, but do not like being waterlogged. Adding worm castings to planting hole helps crown take root and helps hold moisture.
