Diplomat, honeydew melon
0.5g seeds per packet
What a wonderful flavour! The thick, pale green flesh of this Galia-type melon has a rich, tropical aroma and taste. Diplomat is tolerant to powdery mildew as well. The 2.2-2.8kg (5-6lbs) fruits have yellow skins and fine netting, and they grow on strong vines. Trellis these vines or let them sprawl on the ground. Grow in full sun, and do everything you can to increase heat around the plants. Black plastic mulch works well, building and trapping solar energy in the soil for warmer roots and less evaporation.

On the Flower Farm, we like to plant these melon transplants into our tulip beds when the tulip foliage is dying back. We always have a massive harvest of personal sized cantaloupes that we harvest ripe or green and allows to ripen in the pantry well into the fall. One of the best times of year is melon season on the flower farm!
It is essential to start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse 2-4 weeks after the last frost date. Transplant when the plants are 5 weeks old. Optimal soil temperature for germination: 20-25°C (68-77°F). Seeds should sprout in 5-10 days.
Starting
Sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep. Set transplants 60-90cm (24-36″) apart in rows 1.5-2m (5-6′) apart.
