Brilliant Sedum

Brilliant Sedum

1 bare root

Sedum is a tough plant that tolerates fall time temperature swings effortlessly. As a fall cut flower filler plant, it offers beautiful clusters of tiny colourful flowers. When night time temps dip down to as low as -8°c, sedum blooms can still be harvested days after as it generally is un-phased.

As a landscape flower, sedum is generally “the last man standing” before winter sets in. Snow does not phase them, it often makes them more vibrant! Temperatures below -10°c are generally when sedum starts to look weathered. Adding sedum to the garden gives gardeners an extended season of vibrant blooms to enjoy. The foliage is gorgeous right from early spring , with a succulent look as it emerges out of the ground and grows. Sedum comes up very early, generally around the time early season tulips emerge. It’s very low maintenance, requiring only maintenance in the spring to remove the previous seasons growth. Is it not a fan of fertilizer, but it thrives with a spring or fall feeding of worm castings for the microbial benefit.

The problem northern gardeners have with growing sedum is not the cold temperatures. Sedum is not a fan of a lot of water. Spring melting with water sitting stagnant during the thaw in clay soil causes sedum to drown out. Planting sedum in well draining soil , or where water can not over saturate the soil during the spring thaw will eliminate the risk of loss. Also at time of planting, sedum does best when soil is amended with worm castings to help it root. Our best sedum crops have come from starting the bare roots in Superworm soil to build a strong thriving rhizosphere, and amending established plants with Superworm soil.
